New Art Book

Tomorrow, the National Portrait Gallery, London, in association with The National Trust, publishes A Guide to Victorian & Edwardian Portraits by Peter Funnell and Jan Marsh with 60 full colour Illustrations, paperback price £7.99. The front cover features a young Dame Ellen Terry Choosing (1864) painted by George Frederic Watts. Ellen was 16 years old at the time. She married Watts ten months later, just before her 17th birthday. Watts was 43. The marriage lasted less than a year, because Ellen didn't like being a child bride.
