The bad news that BAE Systems will end 400 years of shipbuilding in Portsmouth reminded me of this brilliant painting by James Tissot: Portsmouth Dockyard (1877). Note how the flirtatious lady on the left and the sergeant form a tentative couple, while the lady on the right looks miffed. This painting is in the Tate collection, but may not be on display (CLICK).
