Illustrated London

Christie’s in London will auction artworks from the collection of The Illustrated London News Group in its Interiors sale on 7 October. Leading artists of the day worked on this publication, which was the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine (1842-2003). It covered all major events in London during its long period of publication. Shown is Terence Cuneo's beautiful Design for the front cover of the Festival of Britain edition of The Illustrated London News (1951). Artworks from The Sphere (1900-1964) are also included in the sale. One of its regular contributors was Fortunino Matania, an official war artist for WWI who also depicted scenes from WWII. Highlights from the collection are on view at Christie’s South Kensington until 30 July 2014 (CLICK).
