Political Roundup

Congratulations to Rab C. Nesbitt, who will form the next Scottish government. Whoops! I mean SNP leader Alex Salmond, an easy mistake to make (CLICK). Congratulations too to Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable, who describes the Conservatives as "ruthless, calculating and very tribal" (CLICK). It took him long enough to find out! And congratulations too to the BBC for helping to scotch the AV referendum (CLICK). If you don't believe me, look at the BBC Yes/No graphic: pink, weak, girlie and indecisive for Yes versus a powerful, demanding No in black lettering. Stop pretending to be impartial, BBC. Your graphic artist gave the game away.

Calm down dear, I think you have your knickers in a twist over the graphics for the AV referendum.

Had you been at any count, you would have seen that as votes are sorted and counted into bundles of 50, they are labelled - in this case for the Yes and No boxes - with different colours to identify them. The colours used would be determined by whoever was running the overall election (for London, it was Lewisham Borough Council).

And from my point of view, the BBC and Channel 4 were odiously promoting the Yes vote.

Hi, Judith

This was a tongue-in-cheek post. Interesting that we've taken opposite views of the BBC Yes/No graphic. The whole thing was very badly explained by all concerned, even by the official website set up to explain it. A fellow graduate and I had an hour-long discussion about what happened in different stages of AV.

I noticed a headline in Saturday's Daily Mail, which claimed it had persuaded the punters to vote No. Voting No it claimed was a vote for democracy. Again I take the opposite view: voting No is a vote for the two-party system, which I'm against.

Still, whoever is to blame, it's dead in the water now.
