Women's Day
It may have escaped your notice that today was International Women's Day. PM David Cameron and his buddy Nick Clegg marked the occasion by signing a Council of Europe convention to protect women against various forms of abuse, including being wolf-whistled at in public (CLICK). What about us guys who get whistled at (when I'm wearing my shorts)? Hard cheese lads. This sexist convention will see wolf-whistling by men criminalised. Women can carry on whistling at us with impunity. The new agreement does cover serious offences, such as forced marriage, female genital mutilation and forced abortion. But Cameron promised a specific law against forced marriage and still hasn't kept his word. It's tantamount to raping a girl with parental consent! Click the title link to learn more.

Like many of these well-intentioned laws it will get abused by those determined to claim offence. One can imagine such a situation - "He looked at me".
The young schoolgirls who wolf-whistle my shorts in passing can be forgiven as possibly intending a compliment. Male toned and tanned legs are apparently no longer commonplace sights. Even in sport their peer males show less leg than did Stanley Matthews - and all are incredulous about pictures of the 1966 World Cup kit.
However groups of women, with their children, definitely intend to harrass with their persistent raucous comments as they follow me along a street. History shows such behaviours can be magnified into actual violence when politically encouraged by Church, State, or demagogues.
In my childhood it was considered "not polite" to make audible comments about a stranger's appearance.
Thanks for your comment. The popular press have had a field day with this wolf-whistling nonsense and have missed the deeper intent. That's why I linked to the Honour website.
